How to Recognize It
Authentic fresh Galicia Mussels are identified by the European PDO symbol along with the Galicia Mussel logo. For processed mussels, the logo includes the phrase “made with,” which may also display the European symbol.
Remember: References like “from Galician estuaries” or “produced in Galicia” are only valid and truthful if accompanied by the PDO Galicia Mussel logo.

Certification
Galicia Mussel undergoes rigorous controls to certify its origin and quality.
The process begins with the collection of mussel seed, or “mexilla,” from natural coastal banks under regulations set by the authorities. The journey continues on the rafts, where audits monitor every cultivation phase.
When mussels reach commercial size, producers harvest and transport them to ports, where quality checks ensure compliance with size and meat yield standards.
In processing centers, further inspections verify that the processed product meets established standards. Finally, random checks are conducted at retail points of sale.
The Regulatory Council’s technical staff, together with Bureau Veritas (a certification entity with over 200 years of experience), supervise this process, ensuring the quality of PDO Galicia Mussels.
